Wetsuits
I want a faster
transitionWatch the pros for the best education on fast
transitions.
You'll learn more from that then any
text book explanation. They fly onto their bikes
with shoes already attached to the pedals, they skip
the socks and sunglasses for short distance races
and they put the sunblock on at home. Practice makes
for fast racing and you can have fast T1 times too
with practice! Just make sure the helmet is fastened
at all times while on the bike. As for the bike to
run transition I recommend a lace lock system (I use
plastic\spring backpack locks) so you won't have to
tie your shoes. Grab a sun visor and away you go...
Do
Triathletes Train in the Winter?
For most athletes involved in triathlons, the winter months are
used for recovery, rest and re-evaluation of the previous
season. It is a time to back off long endurance-based training.
Keep a moderate swim base, weight train, focus on core work,
stretch and address physical issues of the body. Take a deep
breath, because base training will begin soon enough in the
upcoming year.
What's brick?
A brick is a double workout, usually a nice long bike ride
followed by a fast run of short to medium length. The purpose is
to simulate race conditions of jumping off the bike and running
full speed. This is an exercise that pays large dividends and
much like speed work on a track, requires determination. The
body needs to be trained to go from biking to running without
much of a warm up and that is the purpose. You can make up your
own bricks of back to back events. More than likely as you
progress in training you will undoubtedly train in more than one
sport per day but it's the time between events that make it a
true brick workout.
Triathlon Training Tips
GET ON YOUR BIKE AND RIDE......
There are many different training methods when it comes to
biking for triathlon preparation. You have easy rides, long slow
distance rides, race pace work and speed work. The biggest
question, "how will my pace improve, if I spend so much time
riding slower?" Less is more athletes. There are training days
dedicated to speed. Cadence is
important
- which means high leg turnover. Remember, you still have to
run, so don't blow up your legs. Work on maintaining 85 rpms -
that is a standard. Is it wrong to push the big gears? Of course
not, but most athletes find it is not the most effective.
What about SPIN classes? They are great. BUT, it is not a
substitute for getting on your bike. Classes are great when
there is bad weather, you are travelling or want a change of
pace Many triathletes have "trainers" that they use so they can
ride their bike indoors. Check to see if your club will allow
usage of gym space to do indoor group rides. Ultimately though,
the best thing to do is get outside in the elements - you never
know what race day will bring.
